Angie Buist’s life changed completely after she moved from bartender to barista and coffee shop owner.
She took ownership of What’s Up Coffee at 1110 E. Main St., Grass Valley, in May and plans to expand her food selection in the next month.
She worked as a bartender for 13 years until she gave up the lifestyle and now lives in a home with her son and dog.
“This seemed like the perfect change,” she said. “It’s pretty much the same thing, (moving) from bartender to barista.”
Buist worked at the coffee shop for a year and a half and bought it from previous owner Jim Sullivan, who bought the store, which was a Caroline’s Coffee Roasters, from Trace Fike, Buist said.
Owning and operating the store has been nerve-wracking but exciting, Buist said.
“It was a lot of learning. I’m still learning just about the business part of it,” said the first-time business owner. “I already loved being here and working here.”
The store’s signature coffee is Black Lab Italian blend from Barking Dog Roasters in Sonoma, which offers a strong, bold flavor, Buist said.
The store also offers local teas from Chico Chai, bagels from Bubba’s Bagels in Grass Valley and baked goods from caterer Annie Luke.
Sandwiches and soups will also be offered in the next month, Buist said.
The shop is not only a place to grab a cup of joe but a place for everyone to feel comfortable, use the free Wi-Fi and computer and take advantage of the two rooms in the back for group meetings and the front and back patio, Buist said.
“We’re really relaxed and cozy here,” she said. “I’ve been able to make it a safe place for anyone to hang out with friends.”
Buist said the coffee shop has been part of the major change for the better in her life.
“I’ve really come full circle, more than I could have ever hoped for,” she said. “It’s pretty amazing.”
