North San Juan and Cal Fire firefighters responded to a residential fire at 5 a.m. Friday on Highway 49 at Peterson’s Corner, said North San Juan Fire Engineer Christoffer Montelius.
The house was a two-story, wood-frame structure with a wrap-around deck, and the upper floor was fully involved when firefighters arrived, Montelius said.
There also was a slow-moving grass fire on the backside of the house that was extending to the outside of an outbuilding.
The grass fire and the outbuilding blaze were quickly extinguished and firefighters attacked the main structure.
Thanks to a prompt response and good teamwork, firefighters extinguished the top floor without any extension to the downstairs.
As firefighters attacked the fire, there was a salvage operation going on downstairs. Cars that were parked close to the structure were moved, and the contents of the downstairs were moved out and protected with tarps.
Nevada County Consolidated Fire Department provided an additional water tender and Camptonville Fire Department brought its mobile air filling station.
The cause of the fire might have been embers on the roof from a wood stove, Montelius said.
