A newly minted Nevada County Sheriff’s Lt. Alicia Milhous playfully admonished her daughter, Jordan, not to make her cry and mess up her makeup as the young woman pinned her mother’s badge on during a promotional ceremony Friday afternoon.
Minutes before, she jokingly whipped out some note cards to read from, saying, “I’m kind of nervous. This is kind of like my first car stop — with a lot of people in the car.”
Milhous said that when she started at the Sheriff’s Office 10 years ago, she wrote down her goals for the next 10 years — and then forgot about the list until recently.
“One of my goals was to make lieutenant in 10 years,” she said, noting that she just hit the 10-year mark as a full-time deputy.
Milhous, a Nevada County native, joined the Air Force straight out of high school and trained as a firefighter.
She was hired as a reserve deputy in August 1999, while working as a group supervisor at Juvenile Hall.
She became a full-time deputy in 2002, working patrol, court security, Major Crimes Unit, narcotics and search and rescue.
She received a Bronze Star for bravery in 2005, for saving the life of a man who barricaded himself on top of his roof, which he had set on fire.
Milhous was promoted to sergeant in December 2008 and has supervised patrol, Truckee substation, the property and evidence unit and the training and personnel unit.
“When I came into office, we didn’t have a lot of women in management or supervisory positions,” Sheriff Keith Royal said. “It’s been a culture change.”
On Friday, Royal also promoted Kelly Flecksteiner to Supervising Cook during the ceremony at the Rood Center, and swore in a number of new hires, including legal office assistant Lorria Williams.
“We’ve been very fortunate,” Royal said. “We’ve been able to hire some of the best … We have one of the finest agencies in the state … and the reality is, it’s because of the people we hire.”
Royal introduced two new correctional officers, Darrick Cossairt and Tucker Raggio. Three new deputies — Dustin Moe, Rory Sonnier and Brandon Lampe — also were sworn in.
