Psychiatry and the Second Amendment

The current battle to wipe out the Second Amendment is supposedly a reaction to the recent Sandy Hook school shooting and an alleged lone gunman who was labeled mentally ill. Suffice it to say there are countless inconsistencies and unanswered questions regarding this event, which is being used to justify the no-holds barred gun-grabbing going on today.

Rahm Emanuel, former White House chief of staff to President Obama, said, “You never let a serious crisis go to waste. And what I mean by that it’s an opportunity to do things you think you could not do before.”

Within hours of Sandy Hook, the conversation turned into a chorus linking gun control with mental health. One problem with this is definition. Exactly who is considered mentally ill? And who makes that determination?

When a government bureaucrat can decide whether or not you can exercise an unalienable right, it is no longer a right but a privilege.

Let’s be clear. In tying mental illness to gun control, they aren’t talking about keeping guns out of the hands of a crazed man shouting, “I need it to kill my mother!”

No, they are talking about a government screening process that involves a federal database of information, like information you share with your doctor, to determine if law-abiding citizens might commit a future crime.

George Santayana said, “Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it.”

The use of psychiatry to eliminate political opponents in the Soviet Union was one of the major human rights scandals of the 1970s and 1980s. Dissidents were labeled schizophrenics, thrown into psychiatric hospitals and drugged just for questioning their government. Resisting Marxism was enough to warrant a diagnosis.

Other countries implicated in diagnosing political dissidents as mentally ill include Nazi Germany, the People’s Republic of China, Romania and more. What better way to silence and remove the opposition than to discredit them by labeling them mentally ill!

Don’t think it can’t happen here.

It is no coincidence that the DSM-5 (Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders), the newly overhauled American Psychiatric Association’s bible, will be released in May of this year. Since no scientifically based evidence exists, psychiatrists actually vote on what they consider to be the latest mental disorders! And it’s far from unanimous. These changes have huge implications, which affect the popularity of drugs and the flow of government money. This isn’t science; it’s politics. A few of the changes for 2013 follow:

1. Temper tantrums will be turned into a mental illness known as “Disruptive Mood Dysregulation Disorder.”

2. The everyday forgetting of old age will likely be misdiagnosed as “Minor Neurocognitive Disorder.”

3. “Hoarding Disorder.” Do you stockpile food, water, ammo, etc? Being prepared could now make you a mental patient.

4. PTSD (Post-traumatic stress disorder). The definition will be expanded and subject to still further misdiagnoses.

Yes, normal human behavior is being officially labeled as mental illness.

The writing is on the wall. Your government is already using psychiatry in an attempt to disarm patriots who might take the Declaration of Independence seriously. The Veterans Administration has been sending out letters threatening to diagnose vets as incompetent to deal with their financial affairs. And by the way, those so labeled will be stripped of their second amendment rights! No due process; no court determination; no proof. Zip! The burden of proof is on the vet to establish his competence within 60 days or submit.

Who will be next? Forgetful seniors receiving social security benefits who just might be members of tea parties?! Divide and conquer.

Now is the time to object, folks! Hitler didn’t take office Monday and send millions to the ovens Friday. The time to protest was early on when liberties were taken; when lives followed, it was too late.

And don’t think you will be any less a victim by hiding your head in the sand or remaining silent while your fellow citizens are targeted. Regardless of your political persuasion, if you don’t get involved and stand up for others, there will be no one left to defend you as the government tightens its vise.

We cannot allow mental health “experts” to decide our fitness to exercise our constitutionally guaranteed rights; these rights are what stand between us and a tyrannical government.
