Nevada Union ski and snowboard teams carve out several top-10 finishes

Nevada Union’s Celine Holland and Drew Bernadett led the Nevada Union snowboard team Monday at Alpine Meadows with first- and second-place finishes, respectively.

Holland finished first with a two-race combined time of one minute, 9.92 seconds, and Bernadett was less than a second behind Holland with a time of 1:10.82.

The two racers edged out Ruby Wood from Tahoe-Truckee High School, who took third place after winning the first race of the season last week.

The Miners also had Morgan Shade finish in 13th place, Micheala Haemig place 19th, and Faith Robichaud grab 25th.

On the boys side, the Miners’ top finisher was Andrew Scarafiotti, taking fifth place with a time of 1:12.67. Scarafiotti was just 3.35 seconds behind first-place finisher Jacob Peak of Placer.

Three other Miners finished in the top 30 with Phillip Breaux taking 14th, Dakota Agran in 18th and Trent Jarvis placing 26th.

Other Miners in action were Bradley Carrion (33rd), Cory Arbaugh (36th), Luca Innocenti (38th) and Frank Benuzzi (41st).

NU alpine team braves elements, finishes 2nd

With the wind-chill factor dropping temperatures below zero Monday at Sugar Bowl, the Miners’ alpine ski team braved the adverse elements and placed second overall in the giant slalom event.

The NU boys team took second in the event, finishing just 13 points behind Davis, which won both the boys and girls competitions to grab the overall victory. The NU girls took third behind Colfax and Davis.

Leading the way for the Nevada Union boys was Peter McDowell finishing in fourth-place with a two-race combined time of 2:06.10. Ethan Good was right behind McDowell with a fifth-place finish in a time of 2:06.80. Michael Sekerek took sixth for NU with a time of 2:11.09, and Caspar Hendrickson placed 18th with a time of 2:24.95.

Other Miners to ride the mountain were Shawn Jordan (20th), Robert Sekerek (21st), Josh Harrison (23rd), Finnegan Paden (24th), Michael Jung (26th) and Frank Ross (36th).

For the girls, Olivia McDowell was the top finisher for the Miners with a seventh-place finish at 2:13.16. Quinlan Grim followed right behind with an eighth-place finish in a time of 2:14.77.

Julia Ramirez took ninth place for NU, Katie King placed 15th, Emma Stratman finished in 16th place, Tori Newman was 18th, Glynn Baxter finished 24th, and Emma Potter took 25th to give NU eight top-25 finishers.

In the girls junior varsity races, Haley Blair finished in 13th, and April Donaldson took 16th.

In boys junior varsity action, John Schlothauer finished third, Joe Fenner took seventh, Logan Ericson was 15th, Robert Andya was 17th, and Sam Mayes rounded things out in 18th.
