National offers modern-day twist on Shakespeare tale

A unique opportunity to watch world-class theatre live from London comes again to Sierra Cinemas. “Timon of Athens,” Shakespeare’s strange fable of consumption, debt and ruin, brought up to date in a brand new production, will be broadcast live to cinemas around the world today (Nov. 1) and Wednesday. The five-star play, directed by Nicolas Hytner and starring Simon Russell Beale, will show at Sierra Cinemas at 7:15 p.m. today and at 3:30 p.m. Wednesday.

Wealthy friend to the rich and powerful, patron of the arts and ostentatious host, Timon of Athens is surrounded by free-loaders and sycophants. He vastly outspends his resources but, finding his coffers empty, reassures his loyal steward that all will be well.

When he calls upon his associates, instead of offering help, they hang him out to dry. After a final, vengeful banquet, Timon withdraws to a literal and emotional wasteland, living off roots and pouring curses on a morally bankrupt Athens.

Simon Russell Beale has been described by the Independent as “the greatest stage actor of his generation.” His recent work for the National Theatre includes “London Assurance,” “Much Ado About Nothing” and “Collaborators,” John Hodge’s Olivier Award-nominated new play in which he portrayed Stalin.

National Theatre Live performances are filmed live in high definition and broadcast via satellite to almost 400 cinemas around the world, live in Europe and some U.S. cities, and time-delayed in countries further afield. The performances at the National are nominated in advance to allow cameras greater freedom in the auditorium.

“Timon of Athens” runs approximately three hours, including intermission. Tickets are $18 for adults, $15 for senior/child/students and are available at Sierra Cinemas Box Office and online at www.sierratheaters.com.
