Vehicle break-ins, thefts plague Nevada City, Grass Valley

A recent rash of reports of vehicle burglaries in Grass Valley — and two vehicle thefts in Nevada City — all have one thing in common, police say.

Every single one of those vehicles was unlocked. And the keys were in the vehicles that were stolen.

“Our suggestion to people is, always lock your vehicle, even if you’re just running into the gas station, and certainly don’t leave the keys inside,” said Nevada City Police Officer Brandon Cannon.

“It’s a crime of opportunity.”

Both vehicles were stolen sometime between late Saturday night and early Sunday morning, in relatively close proximity to each other, Cannon said.

According to dispatch reports, a green Nissan Xterra was reported stolen from the 300 block of Alexander Street. It reportedly has a black snowboard rack and a Wild Mountain Yoga sticker on the back.

A dark grey Toyota pickup with a white camper shell was stolen from the 500 block of North Pine Street during that same time period.

“We made a thorough check of Nevada City, and Grass Valley Police also checked for the vehicles,” Cannon said, adding neither one had been located as of late Monday afternoon.

On Sunday morning alone, three separate reports were made in Grass Valley of vehicle break-ins — on Hughes Road, Townsend Street and Muir Court.

“I think we’ve been averaging two to three every morning,” said Grass Valley Police Sgt. Clint Bates.

“They’re all in different parts of town, but they will hit two to four vehicles in the same area.”

All of the break-ins being reported involve unlocked vehicles, with no forced entry, Bates said.

To make your vehicle less attractive to such opportunistic burglaries, take your valuables out — or secure them in an area where they’re not visible, such as the truck, recommended Cannon.
