Bridgeport Bridge restoration funds get a boost

We would like to thank The Union, reporter Matthew Renda and photographer John Hart for the feature article “Saving a Symbol” Aug. 16.

This article raised the community’s awareness of the plight of the historical covered bridge at Bridgeport in the South Yuba River State Park and the campaign “Save Our Bridge.” The covered bridge is not only an iconic symbol of our community, it is a national treasure. As the longest single span covered wooden bridge still standing in the world, it needs to be restored for public use.

As a result of your article, we have had three exciting offers from community businesses and leaders to help raise funds for the restoration and a number of donations from private donors. We are thrilled that Sierra Theaters is sponsoring us as a beneficiary of this year’s Classic Movie Series! The Del Oro will not only advertise the S.O.B. campaign but will donate 60 percent of the proceeds from the series. Take family and friends and enjoy some real classics! Please support this film series! To donate to the campaign, visit the SYRPA website: http://southyubariverstatepark.org/index.html or mail to SYRPA, P.O. Box 1658 Penn Valley, CA 95946.

Dave Anderson, president,

South Yuba River Park Association
