Gymnasts set for state meet

After wrapping up a very strong gymnastics season, The Gold Country Gymnastics XCEL Competition team will put their skills on display April 13 at the state meet in Rancho Cordova.

The EXCEL team comprised of Jessi Gunsalus, Fayth Woodward, Peyton White, Katrina Herrlinger, Bethany Sumner, Kaia Smith, Makayla Whittington and Skyler Meinholz have shown great talent, support, and dedication to a sport that is challenging on the mind and body.

Gunsalus, a three-year team captain heads into the state meet with an impressive season-high all-around of 35.2.

Woodward, one of the team’s newer members, tallied a personal best all-around of 35.850; placing 1st on floor, bars, and vault in the Oroville meet.

White, a former compulsory competitor and seasoned gymnast, returned to gymnastics with excitement for the XCEL program and finished strong with an all-around high of 35.3, placing first on the vault and second on the floor.

Herrlinger, now a seasoned gymnast with an amazing spinning ability, shocked the judges and the crowd with an impressive front fly away off the bars, with extreme difficulty scoring an 8.550.

Sumner, also a seasoned compulsory and starting competitor in the foundation of the XCEL program at Gold Country Gymnastics, enters the state meet after placing third on the vault, with a personal best of 9.0 on floor and with an all-around 34.225.

Smith, another seasoned compulsory participant and starting competitor of the XCEL at Gold Country Gymnastics showed amazing resilience, refusing to scratch after getting a bloody nose moments before competing in the floor exercise. She stuffed her nose with tissue and scored a personal best in the floor with an 8.925 taking first-place and placing second with an all-around 34.

Whittington, a first year XCEL competitor showed grace and determination scoring a personal best 34.2 all-around. Whittington placed second on the beam and the floor, as well as placing fourth in the vault.

Meinholz, the youngest on the team, is competing in her first season in XCEL scored an 8.925 on the vault, placing fourth. She also nabbed second on the beam and tallied a personal best all-around of 34.4.

Boys gymnastics

The Gold Country boys gymnastics team travelled to Oroville March 16 and 17 to compete in the state meet with great success.

Rhett Miller earned the State Champion Award for his parallel bars routine in Level 7 competition with a score of 10.3.

Miller finished sixth on the floor with a score of 12.05. Miller’s scores qualified him for the Regional Meet in Reno where teams from California, Nevada, Hawaii, and Arizona will compete April 4.

Josh Cooley competed in Level 8 and earned second place on floor with a 12.00, third on the hi-bar with a 9.8. Cooley finished with a 59.8 landing him 5th all around and qualified for Regionals in Reno NV

Aidan Arthur and Nathan Hunt competed in the Level 9 division and had all around scores of 63.7 and 61.5, respectively. Arthur finished the level 9 season strong completing front hand-spring front-tuck on the vault. Hunt completed an exciting cut-catch release move on his hi-bar routine this season.
