“The only thing constant in life is change.” Many folks are credited with various versions of this quote, but as written, this one most often gets attributed to Francois de la Rochefoucald.
It appears from the website, ThinkExist.com that Francios was a very quotable guy, racking up 768 to his credit. From what I can see, he has quotes on a number of subjects like change, love, hate, friendship, fear, wisdom and women, which makes him look like an expert on some of life’s biggest challenges. Sorry, girls.
Unfortunately, I don’t consider myself an expert on anything, try as I may, but I do embrace change as a constant. It’s an important ingredient to growth, and I bring that philosophy to my job at The Union. It shall always be open season on the status quo, and the bar gets higher every day. It’s in that spirit that I’m pleased to announce some changes that will soon take place in The Union.
You may have noticed that we have been steadily renovating Prospector, our weekly entertainment guide, transforming it into a much more in-depth and robust publication. Prospector will not only be a guide for entertainment news but will be the No. 1 comprehensive, local source for great stories, weekend happenings, cool places to eat and drink and so much more. Starting next week, puzzles, games and classified ads from Sunday Express will now be in Prospector.
In addition to the exciting changes with Prospector, we are also expanding and enhancing the content in the Weekender (Saturday’s edition of The Union) by adding articles about travel, book reviews and Jim Mullen’s opinion column. As a result of these enhancements to Prospector and the Weekender, we will no longer publish Sunday Express as its content is being transitioned into these two publications.
If you’re used to picking up Sunday Express at various locations throughout Grass Valley and Nevada City, you probably noticed Prospector showing up at those same locations since last November. We began building the free distribution of Prospector across the area while we refined its new, fresh design, layout and enhanced content. Prospector will still be included in the Thursday edition of The Union, and by March, Prospector will have added 5,000 additional copies that will be distributed free every week at approximately 150 locations from Nevada City on south to Auburn.
This expanded distribution not only provides non-members of The Union with access to the most comprehensive weekly entertainment news and information, but it also dramatically increases the availability to tourists who visit our communities every weekend of the year. Prospector will continue to build its social currency value by providing local residents and tourists in the Sierra foothills with weekly news and previews on what to do and where to go with their families and friends.
Everybody loves a great makeover, so another developing change in editorial focus within the next few months will broaden Thursday’s education-themed coverage into a wider variety of stories and information regarding family life within our communities. The new “Family Focus” section will do just that — focus on families so they can make more informed decisions to get the most out of life in the foothills.
Finally, I’d be remiss if I didn’t mention our next “big read” special report in The Union set for March 2. It’s an in-depth look at the changing landscape and intended development of South County. From the recent sale of DarkHorse golf course to the planned development at Rincon del Rio to the continuing efforts to build a new Bel Air grocery store inside the boundaries of Nevada County, we’ll explore where South County looks to grow and the hurdles it still needs to jump.

These changes are a direct result of the ideas, input and feedback that we have been getting directly from you, so keep those cards and letters coming!
There is an abundance of folks in our community who want to see our area grow and prosper and are willing to be a part of the change necessary to make that happen. We have incredibly valuable and distinguishable assets that we can leverage in order to become a model for the outside world to relish.
Last, a favorite quote of mine most widely attributed to Margaret Mead, “Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world; indeed, it is the only thing that ever has.” Ain’t that the truth!
