Health workshops available for individuals with chronic health conditions

Western Sierra Medical Clinic (WSMC) is collaborating with Hilltop Commons Independent Senior Living to provide community members with the opportunity to join the free six-week Healthier Living Workshop Series.

Healthier Living is a grant-funded, six-week series designed to help those living with chronic health conditions including, but not limited to: diabetes, MS, celiac disease, ALS, heart disease, arthritis, and chronic pain.

Classes will meet weekly at the Hilltop Commons on Wednesdays, from 1:30 to 4 p.m. through February 13.

In addition, an evening class is being held at Miners Family Health Center on Thursdays from 6 to 8:30 p.m.

The “Healthier Living” program offers information, resources and support for individuals on topics including pain and symptom management, exercise and nutrition, dealing with difficult emotions, relaxation techniques, and tips for communicating with health care professionals.

The class is participatory and provides for shared learning experiences between class members.

It was designed by Stanford University and is made possible at WSMC through a grant from the California Collaborative for Chronic Disease Prevention.

“So many people can benefit from this class,” says co-instructor Chris Grace, Medical Assistant at Western Sierra Medical Clinic. “I’ve been teaching it for over two years, and I see how participants find the courage and confidence to improve how they live each day.”

All participants will receive the companion book, Living a Healthy Life with Chronic Conditions, and a guided relaxation tape.

Pre-registration is required and can be made by contacting Chris Grace at (530) 274-9762.

Hilltop Commons is located at 131 Eureka Street, in Grass Valley. Miners Family Health Center is located at 1345 Whispering Pines Lane, in Grass Valley.
