Upcoming Sustainable Local Food and Farm Conference (video)

Joel Salatin of Polyface Farms, a Virginia farmer who has become internationally known after being featured in Michael Pollan's book, "The Omnivore's Dilemma," and in the movie "Food, Inc.," will be the keynote speaker at a sustainable food conference organized by Nevada County Grown.

The Sustainable Local Food and Farm Conference, set for Jan. 22 at the Gold Miners Inn-Holiday Inn Express in downtown Grass Valley, will bring together several of the country's top lecturers on sustainable farming and the importance of growing and consuming nutrient-dense food.

In addition to the lecture schedule, an indoor expo will present local farmers and sustainable food activists sharing and promoting their efforts.

Other attractions:

• Nevada County Grown wineries will host a wine garden with local wines for sampling.

• Salatin will give two lectures and participate in a panel discussion at the end of the second lecture series.

• Other speakers include Dr. Will Winter, the founder of the Holistic Livestock Association; Mark McAfee, the founder and president of Organic Pastures Dairy; and Aaron Lucich, creator of the documentary "We Are What We Eat."

• A free family lecture on getting children to eat healthy food, starting at 9:30 a.m.

• A group panel discussion that starts at 6 p.m.

The Food and Farm Expo will be open to the public from 10:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Lectures will begin at 11:15 a.m., and Salatin will speak on "The Sheer Ecstasy of Being A Lunatic Farmer" at 3:20 p.m.

Tickets for the evening session are $30, while the day session costs $50; register for the full conference for $70 ($65 for Nevada County Grown members).
