Disney film has Nevada County ties

​On Friday, July 18, the new animated Disney movie “Planes: Fire & Rescue” will premiere at Sierra Cinemas in Grass Valley with two or three showings between noon and 4 p.m. The producers of the movie visited Northern California while creating the movie and used the Grass Valley Air Attack Base as inspiration for portions of the movie, according to Nevada County CEO Rick Haffey.

The Nevada County Airport has partnered with Sierra Cinemas, the U.S. Forest Service, Cal Fire, and the local chapter of the Experimental Aircraft Association (EAA chapter 1175) to celebrate the premiere with a series of community outreach events. Inside the reception area of Sierra Cinemas on Friday, the partnering organizations will provide information and education about their respective organizations from noon to 4 p.m. In attendance at the premiere will be the U.S. Forest Service’s Smokey Bear.

Representatives from EAA chapter 1175 will be at the premiere to inform parents and kids about the Young Eagles flights that will take place at the airport the following day, Saturday, July 19, from 9 a.m. until noon, during “Young Eagles Day.” While the Young Eagles flights are taking place, the Grass Valley Air Attack Base’s U.S. Forest Service and Cal Fire personnel will provide tours of their aircraft and facilities to families visiting the airport. The tours of the base will be available from 10 a.m. until noon. Young Eagles flights are free and are available to kids ages 8-17, with parental or guardian consent. Nevada County wins digital county award

The Center for Digital Government and the National Association of Counties have announced the 2014 Digital Counties Survey winners. The annual survey recognizes leading examples of counties using technology to improve services and boost efficiencies. The survey, conducted by the CDG and Digital Communities program, in partnership with NACo, identifies best technology practices among U.S. counties.

“Congratulations to this year’s winners for their dedication to public service and forging partnerships that proactively address rapidly changing citizen demands and expectations,” said Center for Digital Government Executive Director Todd Sander. “Their ability to be continually innovative in an ever changing technological landscape is admirable and commendable.”

“Counties across the country are using technology to enhance services, maximize efficiency and save money,” said NACo Executive Director Matthew D. Chase. “The Digital Counties Survey recognizes counties’ best practices and effective uses of technology to better serve their communities.”

Nevada County placed 5th this year, marking 11 years in a row that the county has made the top 10 most digital counties in the nation list.

Market match for CalFresh recipients

A new program is starting in late July with a goal of increasing access to fresh fruits and vegetable by low-income households in Western Nevada County by providing $25 vouchers to CalFresh recipients. The CalFresh program offers qualifying low income individuals financial assistance in purchasing food for themselves and their families. The Department of Social Services, utilizing CalFresh outreach funds, has partnered with Dial 211 Public Authority to administer this Market Match Pilot Program. Similar programs are utilized at hundreds of farmers markets across California and the concept is accepted by the U.S. Department of Agriculture as an evidence-based obesity prevention strategy. The Market Match vouchers will be redeemable at participating farmers markets through November of this year to purchase fresh fruits and vegetables only.

In 2013, the Nevada County Public Health Department’s Nutrition Education and Obesity Prevention program identified the creation of a Market Match program as a key strategy toward improving the health of the low-income population. That same year, the Department of Social Services contracted with Dial 211 Public Authority to conduct CalFresh outreach and assist residents in applying for CalFresh benefits. In addition, the county worked with the Nevada County Certified Growers Market Association to relocate the Tuesday afternoon farmers market to the Rood Center, improving access to the market by CalFresh recipients.

This Market Match Pilot program brings all of these efforts together through incentivizing the use of CalFresh nutritional assistance at farmers markets. The goals of the program include increasing access and consumption of fresh fruits and vegetables for residents within their limited budgets. Currently less than 1 percent of CalFresh dollars spent in Nevada County are used at farmers markets.

Congressman LaMalfa’s representative to hold satellite office

​Congressman Doug LaMalfa’s field representative, Jennifer Horne, will be holding a satellite office in the Northstar Conference Room located in the County Executive Office in the Rood Government Center on Tuesday, from 8-11 a.m.
