Comcast customers lose service for 5 hours

A fiber-optic cable was cut during a construction accident at Beale Air Force Base Thursday morning, leaving Comcast customers in Nevada County unable to access phone, TV and Internet service.

Martin Brothers Construction, a Sacramento-based firm, was reportedly doing backhoe work in the vicinity of Warren Shingle Road (also known as 14th Street) and Camp Beale Highway when they accidentally cut a fiber-optic cable that runs through the base.

The matter got complicated when Comcast’s repair crew reportedly had trouble getting past base security.

“As soon as we saw those alarms go off, we dispatched a crew there, but the crew had some difficulty getting onto the base,” said Bryan Byrd, director of communications for Comcast California.

“That’s not a normal situation, like if they were rolling to an intersection in Grass Valley,” he said.

“It took some time to get the crew on base.”

The incident occurred at roughly 10:45 a.m., Byrd said, and service was restored by 3:45 p.m.

Any Comcast customers still having difficulty accessing the Internet are advised to reset their modems. This can be done by pushing the small button on the back of the modem, using a paper-clip if necessary.
