"Welcome to Nevada City" sign swiped from building after Amgen

A vintage fabric banner welcoming spectators to Sunday’s Amgen tour was apparently pilfered from the roof of a Nevada City business the night after the race.

The red, blue and yellow banner reads “Welcome to Nevada City” and was made in the 40s or 50s, according to Caroline Szekely, who posted it above the building she leases on 115 S. Pine St. The building is under renovation and will house the Nevada City Marketplace upon completion.

The thief tore part of the siding in the process of pulling the sign down, Szekely said.

“We put it up just for the races,” Szekely said. “It’s outrageous that someone would want to steal it.”

To report any information about the sign’s whereabouts, contact the Nevada City Police Department at (530) 265-4700.
