Protect our Second Amendment rights

There is a one-word answer to all those who advocate gun control and actively desire to see the Constitution's Second Amendment repealed: Holocaust.

"The most foolish mistake we could possibly make would be to allow the subject races to possess arms. History shows that all conquerors who have allowed their subject races to carry arms have prepared their own downfall by so doing." – Adolf Hitler, April 1942

And between six and 12 million of those "subject races" were gassed and cremated in the ovens of Europe.

"One death is a tragedy; one million is a statistic."

"Ideas are more powerful than guns. We would not let our enemies have guns, why should we let them have ideas."

"The only real power comes out of a long rifle."

The three quotes above are by Josef Stalin, the brutal dictator who murdered hundreds of millions of his countrymen in the Communist purges of the twenties and thirties. He also said, ""Death solves all problems – no man, no problem."

It has been proven over and over that those who ignore the lessons of history are doomed to repeat them. And the lessons of history are elusive in today's educational system, for fear of "offending" anyone in our politically correct culture.

I know it's really uncool to say this, but a restitution of morality in our society would go a long way toward curbing the gun violence we are beset with. It's taken nearly 50 years, but we are now experiencing the results of the "if it feels good, do it" social philosophy of my Baby Boomer generation.

And I'm not talking about morality in a religious sense, I'm suggesting morality in the most basic, "do unto others as you would have them do unto you" sense. I believe that most of humanity, regardless of whatever religion or non-religion they profess, are at heart good, decent human beings. We've seen it over and over in times of crisis, in times of disaster around the world, and in our communities, people reaching out to help others in need.

But there's no denying that there will always be those who are driven to take advantage of others and those who, in extreme cases, are driven to enslave others they believe inferior to them, racially, intellectually or culturally. And it is foolish to believe that the United States will always be exempt.

"The right of citizens to bear arms is just one more guarantee against arbitrary government, one more safeguard against the tyranny which now appears remote in America, but which historically has proved to be always possible." – Hubert Humphrey, "Know Your Lawmakers", Guns magazine, February 1960

"Those now possessing weapons and ammunition are at once to turn them over to the local police authority. Firearms and ammunition found in a Jew's possession will be forfeited to the government without compensation. Whoever willfully or negligently violates the provisions will be punished with imprisonment and a fine." – Nazi Law (Regulations Against Jews' Possession of Weapons), 1938

"Political power grows out of the barrel of a gun." – Mao Zedong, "Problems of War and Strategy," 1938.

The two quotes above are not the ravings of some third-world banana dictators. They are from the governments of cultures going back thousands of years, advanced civilizations much older than our United States. And yet their populations fell prey to the same propaganda we hear in our country today, the same violence that has its roots not in the possession of guns, but in the loss of morality and values in a decaying society.

"To disarm the people is the best and most effective way to enslave them." – George Mason

"The very atmosphere of firearms anywhere and everywhere restrains evil interference – they deserve a place of honor with all that's good." – George Washington

"When governments fear the people, there is liberty. When the people fear the government, there is tyranny. The strongest reason for the people to retain the right to keep and bear arms is, as a last resort, to protect themselves against tyranny in government." – Thomas Jefferson

We say, "oh, it can't happen here." Yep, I bet that's exactly what all those European Jews and gypsies and Russian peasants were saying up to the very minute they stepped off those trains into the concentration camps and the gulags, the gas chambers and the crematories.

Thank you, Sheriff Royal, for standing to protect our 2nd Amendment rights.
