Man charged in theft of motorcycle

A solid piece of some early morning detective work resulted in the arrest of an alleged motorcycle thief on the run.

Grass Valley Police Department officers were patrolling the Seven Hills area of Nevada City at 5:20 a.m. Thursday when they spied a man riding a red and white motorcycle, said Sgt. Alex Gammelgard of GVPD.

Suspicious were aroused as a motorcycle of similar description had been stolen from Mark’s Cycle Store in Grass Valley last week, and another motorcycle had been taken from Truckee.

The motorcycle in question was neither of those.

Instead, William Vaughn, 45, of Spokane, Wash., had allegedly stolen the motorcycle while in Coeur d’Alene, Idaho, and was in Nevada County visiting relatives, Gammelgard said.

The officer began following the motorcycle, and Vaughn immediately pulled it into the nearest driveway, which Gammelgard described as a typical technique used by suspicious drivers who are trying to fool the officers into believing they have just arrived at their home.

The officer made contact with Vaughn, who reportedly jumped the fence immediately, spurring a brief foot pursuit that ended in the arrest of Vaughn without further incident.

Vaughn was allegedly in possession of a substance suspected to be methamphetamine and was charged with a felony count of possession of a controlled substance. Vaughn was also charged with felony vehicle theft, resisting arrest and providing a false name to law enforcement.
