Thieves make off with $10,000 Tiffany lamp

Thieves broke into a lighting store in Grass Valley and used the business’ own dolly to make off with a 6-foot bronze Tiffany lamp that retails for $10,000.

David Boynton, the owner of Illumination The Lamp Doctor on East Main Street, discovered the break-in New Year’s Eve morning, according to dispatch reports.

“They threw a big rock through the front plate glass window,” said Boynton’s stepfather, Arnold Goldberg.

“They managed to get the cash register opened, which had a spare door key.”

They then opened the front door and used the dolly to steal the lamp, which Goldberg said weighed more than 200 pounds. The burglars also took about $300 in the register and a bank bag with an estimated $1,800 in checks, as well as the register itself and a few other items, including a new set of gear wrenches.

“They rifled through every cabinet, every drawer,” Goldberg said, adding that they took the time to drink a bottle of water and a diet Dr. Pepper they found in a fridge.

But the big-ticket item definitely was the floor lamp, which featured a “magnificent” Tiffany glass shade and a bronze mermaid riding a dolphin.

“The lamp is so unique they would have to chop it up for brass or try to peddle it,” Goldberg said.

Goldberg is hoping the piece turns up, however.
