With just 34 seconds left in the fourth quarter, the Nevada Union basketball team trailed Vista del Lago by seven points.
That’s when NU’s Cody Gardner took over.
The senior guard scored eight of his 20 points in the final 34 seconds of the fourth quarter to force overtime, and then sealed it with free throws in the extra period to give NU the 72-65 overtime victory.
Gardner hit a pair of 3-pointers and scored on a drive to the hoop down the stretch to force the extra period.
In overtime, the Miners trailed 65-63, but closed on a nine-point run, including clutch free throws from Gardner and Jason Mickel. The two NU seniors hit a combined 7-of-8 free throws to earn the win for NU.
Nevada Union’s big man, Lucas Vojak, led the team in scoring with 22 points and 12 rebounds, Mickel finished with 12 points and six rebounds, Elliot Fournier added nine points and four assists in the win, and Garrett O’Callaghan chipped in four points and two rebounds in five minutes of play.
The Miners (4-4) will look to get above .500 this season today when they travel to face Reno.

Vista del Lago 62
The Miners held a six-point lead at the half and were able to withstand an Eagle run in the fourth to win by two.
Daniel Carter was the top-scorer for NU with 17 points, Lukas Sweigart poured in 12, and Mario Edwards in his first game with the junior varsity squad chipped in 11 points.
The Miners hit the road today to take on Reno.

Vista del Lago 40
The Miners took it to the Eagles Thursday night and earned the 10-point victory.
Bo Perkins was the high-man for NU with 16 points, and John Chensee added 11 points in the win.
The Miners travel today to face Reno.
Bear River 96,
Valley Christian 73
The Bruins offense had things clicking Thursday night as they trampled Valley Christian by 23 points.
Justin Beskeen led the Bear River offense with 27 points, Tyler Hajewski added 19, Braden Duncan had a strong night with 11 points and Nick Bachus chipped in 10 in the win.
Bear River (5-1) will take on Forest Lake Christian today in the second round of the Victory Christian Tournament.
Nevada Union 52, Sheldon 50
The Lady Miners won in spectacular fashion Thursday night with a last second bucket to beat Sheldon.
With just a few ticks left on the clock, NU’s Erin Selleck took the ball full court, made a cross-over dribble followed it by a spin move that got her to the hoop and she sank the close-range shot to win the game, said NU coach John McDaniel.
Selleck finished with nine points to go with two assists on the night.
Sophomore standout Sammy DeHart led the Lady Miners in scoring with 16 points and six rebounds, and Sydney Porter added nine points on a night when every active Lady Miner scored.
NU (7-3) faces Mission San Jose today in the second round of the Wine Valley Tournament in Napa.
JV: Nevada Union 52,
Rio Americano 21
The Lady Miners press was too much for Rio Americano, allowing NU to cruise to a 31-point victory.
Callie Kraus was outstanding from the field, hitting 5-of-10 shots behind the 3-point line and finishing with a game-high 19 points. Grace Paye crashed the boards hard, finishing with 12 rebounds and 10 points, and Sarah Lundmark added 10 points and seven rebounds in the win.
The Lady Miners (5-5) take on Folsom today in the second round of the Bella Vista Tournament.
Frosh: Nevada Union 56,
Casa Roble 26
The Lady Miners are back on track after a couple losses, winning in convincing fashion over Casa Roble.
Leading the NU charge was Sofia Van Valkenberg with 16 points, three rebounds and two assists. Audrey Jacus added nine points, pulled down 10 rebounds and dished out six assists. Chelsea Rodriguez rounded things out for the Lady Miners with eight points, nine assists and six steals.
NU will face Rocklin today in the second round of the Bella Vista Tournament.
