If all goes according to plan, Lazy Dog Chocolateria will be open mid-October at 111 Mill St. in downtown Grass Valley.
The location will present owners Bob and Deb Peterson’s return a storefront after years of mobile vending.
In the 1980s, the couple ran Confectionately Yours in Nevada City, before taking their popular treats on the road — under the moniker Lazy Dog Ice Cream — in their signature modified pink classic Chevrolet truck.
Since then, the Peterson’s frozen concoctions have become renowned, garnering lines at events like the Willie Nelson concert, Music in the Mountains’ Summer Fest and, most recently, the Celtic Festival.
The pair have been providing sweet treats for nearly 35 years.
“It’s the funniest job because you never meet grumpy people,” Peterson said.
Some of their flavors include Bailey’s Irish Cream, bing cherry, cappucino crunch, mocha almond fudge, sidecar scooter and Swiss orange chip.
“We are actually candy makers,” said Deb Peterson. “The ice cream actually came later.”
During the summer, the couple has also sold their treats from the Fowler Center, located on Nevada City Highway. During the winter, they make chocolates, caramel, toffee and other sweets.
“You should hear the whining that goes on at the end of the season,” Peterson said. “You’d think it was the end of the world. It cracks me up.
“My customers are the best in the world.”
Lazy Dog will take over what has been the Wild Plum Sweetery, a cozy shop where hand-crafted chocolates, gelato, coffee and baked goods were sold.
Wild Plum owners Laura and Kevin Minto announced in late September they would be leaving the Mill Street location after nearly a decade, Peterson said.
The locale will provide the Pettersons the ability to sell ice cream and chocolates year-round.
“We’re hoping to be in there and be ready and mid-October,” Peterson said.
