Kevin James Lucas, 24, of Grass Valley, has been arrested on suspicion of stealing jewelry.
“In late December, a senile resident of Grass Valley residing in the 200 block of Celesta Road reported that her house had been burglarized,” said Sgt. Clint Bates, with the Grass Valley Police Department.
“Approximately $12,500 in jewelry had been stolen.”
The victim identified Lucas as a possible suspect.
“He was kind of an acquaintance that they hired to do some yard work around the house, providing proximity and access to the property,” Bates said.
Law enforcement officers spent nearly two months investigating the case, looking through pawnshops for items matching the victim’s description. Eventually, pawn slips were discovered allegedly linking Lucas to the stolen property.
Lucas is believed by law enforcement to be a transient residing in the Grass Valley area, but they had difficulty locating him.
Saturday afternoon he was spotted in the vicinity of Mill Street and Rhode Island St., at which time law enforcement made contact. During the course of that interview, officers said they established probable cause and took Lucas into custody.
Lucas is being held on $60,000 bail for second-degree burglary, as well as first-degree burglary of an inhabited dwelling.
