Right on course
April 30, 2013
Led by their sensational sophomores, Logan Lowe, Andrew Puleo and Derek Frank, the Nevada Union golf team handled its business Thursday, taking down Sierra Foothill League combatant Woodcreek, 192-228.
Playing on their home course at Alta Sierra Country Club, Lowe and Frank shared the top spot, both shooting a 2-over-par 38. Puleo along with Bert Heinzelman both closed the day with scores of 40.
“Puleo, Lowe and Frank, their work ethic is like no other,” NU head coach Hank Davidson said. “That’s why they do as well as they do. I think all three have legitimate chances to go far in the playoffs.”
Bradley Carrion was right behind his teammates Thursday, closing with a 41.
“Bradley has been a pleasant surprise this season,” Davidson said. “I’ve seen that kid smile a lot this year.”
Robert Sekerak was the next Miner with a non-scoring 50.
With Thursday’s win, the Miners concluded their SFL head-to-head schedule with a 6-4 record but still need a strong showing at the final SFL tourney Tuesday at Catta Verdera Country Club in Lincoln to make the playoffs as a team.
“We probably have to win it,” Davidson said. “I think we have a shot. We certainly have the ability.”
At the first SFL tourney April 22, the Miners finished in third behind Del Oro and Granite Bay.
Even if the Miners don’t win the SFL tourney they will still likely send three players to the playoffs as individuals, Davidson said.
Bear River 232, Center 270
The Bruins closed their Pioneer Valley duel season at 5-5 after Thursday’s home victory over Center.
Playing on the Lake of the Pines Golf Course, Jake DePass led Bear River with a 40, Dillon Smith and Ian Armstrong were next, both shooting 43, Drew Cramer added a 45, and Chris Raigoza rounded things out with a 61.
The Bruins will now head to Monday’s final PVL tourney at Timber Creek Golf Course in Roseville.
