Prep Roundup: Roseville tops NU boys, Lady Miners blowout Roseville
February 1, 2013
The Nevada Union boys basketball team struggled with Roseville’s half-court trap defense Friday night and it led to their fourth straight Sierra Foothill League loss.
Playing in a hostile homecoming environment, the Miners (8-14, 1-4 SFL) couldn’t hang on to a slight halftime edge, and fell 62-54 to the Tigers (17-5, 2-3 SFL).
After a sloppy first quarter, NU’s McKay Ritchie got things going for the Miners as the senior guard scored 10 points in the second quarter, including a pair of 3-pointers.
NU entered halftime with a 29-28 lead, but Roseville came out swinging in the third, outscoring NU 17-10 to take a six-point advantage into the final stanza. The Miners kept it close and were within six points in the final minute, but could not get the shots they needed to win.
Senior guard Cody Gardner was the high scorer for NU with 15 points, Lucas Vojak added 12 points, and Jason Mickel chipped in seven.
The Miners will look to get their second SFL victory Wednesday when they host Woodcreek, who they beat earlier this month 75-68 in double overtime.

The Lady Miners bounced back nicely from their Wednesday loss to Del Oro by thumping Roseville.
