Prep roundup: Nevada Union golf finds its stroke

The Nevada Union boys golf team had struggled for much of the season, going 1-7 in Sierra Foothill League duals heading into spring break — but what a difference a week can make.
The Miners returned to play this week and tallied a win against Roseville Wednesday and another Thursday against Woodcreek, 208-222. Now the Miners are holding their heads high as they prepare for the final SFL tournament of the season.
The Miners beat Woodcreek at the Par-36 Alta Sierra Country Club and were led by the day's medalist Logan Lowe with a 38. Derek Frank tallied a 39 for NU, Bradley Carrion finished with a 43 and Andrew Puleo and Max Heinzelman both carded a 44.
Nevada Union (3-7 SFL) hits the links again Tuesday for the SFL Tournament.
Bear River 262
The Bruins closed their PVL dual season with a loss to Lincoln at the Par-35 Lake of the Pines Country Club Thursday.
Bear River was led by Ian Armstrong with a 49, Drew Cramer with a 50, and James Lavelle and Ryan Wagner each with a 54.
The Bruins (3-7 PVL) are back at it Monday for the final PVL tournament.
Del Oro 13,
Nevada Union 0
Del Oro's Kyle Yamada threw a perfect game Thursday as Del Oro thumped Nevada Union 13-0.
The Miners had no answers for the junior hurler, as he sat them down in order.
The Miners (6-12, 2-6 SFL) and the Golden Eagles meet today at Del Oro (12-8, 5-3 SFL) for the rubber match.
Nevada Union 5, Woodcreek 4
The Miners had to pull together Thursday to secure a home win over Woodcreek as the SFL dual season came to a close.
At No. 1 singles, Michael Quinn lost in two sets. Weston Strawser took his match to three sets and won the third 6-3 to win No. 2 singles. Pedro Spegiorin also went to a third set, but lost it 3-6 in the No. 3 spot. At No. 4 singles, Jack Wright, who is just a freshman, won his match 6-3, 6-0 with his consistent style of play. Romeo Connors, another freshman who has improved a lot in this short season, won the No. 5 singles without a problem 6-0, 6-1. At No. 6 singles, Kai Usami never could get his shots going and lost 3-6, 1-6. The No. 2 doubles team of Connor Pardini and Cyrus Malin put up a good fight, but fell 5-7, 3-6. Franz Shimek and Cody Capella played a great match at No. 3 doubles to win decisively, 6-2, 6-0.
At that point the overall match was tied at 4-4 with the No. 1 doubles team of Ben Beltran and Kris Colen still on the court in the deciding match. They had already won the first set and Colen was serving at 5-4 in the second set. He hit three service winners in a row to close out the match and secure the team win at for the Miners.
NU's next event is the SFL singles tournament Monday at Rocklin.
JV: Nevada Union battles Woodcreek in doubleheader
The Lady Miners traveled to Woodcreek Wednesday and battled the league leading Timberwolves to a 6-6 tie in game one and a 3-2 loss in the nightcap.
In the first game, Riley Newman pitched a complete game for NU.
Catching Newman was Ashton Willis who was behind the plate for both games and made several nice plays.
From the plate in game one, Gracie Ramos had two doubles and scored two runs, Aycee Willis added a double and a triple, and Hope Marrich went 3-for-3.
In game two, Aycee Willis pitched six strong innings, allowing five hits and one earned run.
The Lady Miners were led offensively by Alex Pussich with three hits.
Nevada Union (10-8-1, 2-5-1 SFL) plays Rocklin today.
