Prep roundup: Nevada Union girls soccer tops Capital Christian
March 16, 2014
The Nevada Union girls soccer team won the consolation contest at the Christian Brothers Tournament over the weekend, beating the Capital Christian Lady Cougars, 3-1.
Shelby Di Lorenzo put one in from a corner kick while Delaney Graham and Christy O'Connor each found net in the second half. Each goal was a result of a combination of well executed passes from a strong offense and the back up from a developing defensive squad.
The two day Christian Brother's tournament greeted the Lady Miners with a dramatic change in temperature as they drove down the hill to South Sacramento. The first match was on a hot and humid pitch against Vacaville High School who won with a 4-1 score. NU's Christy O'Connor put one into the net in the second half when the Lady Miners finally adjusted to the weather and dominated play but just couldn't get it into the net.
"I chose this tournament because it had some pretty strong teams in the brackets and+ ours was the toughest with Vacaville, St. Francis and Oak Ridge, who will be joining the SFL next season," NU head coach Ken Ramirez said in an email. "We had a real bad show in our second match against Oak Ridge Friday night, who I believe played stronger than what I've seen in the SFL, beating us, 6-0. St. Francis then beat Oak Ridge 2-0 so we geared up to save face and worked them pretty well in the pitch where the Miners played tough and had ample shots. The final score of that match was St. Francis three to NU's zip … but the game was great."
Each of NU's three keepers, Emma Curtis, Ellie De Martini, and Emma Stratman did great jobs, said Ramirez.
"All the girls improved throughout the games and are eager to start training to take their play to the next level and increase the intensity and speed of the game. … all the right things a coach wants to hear," he said.
Nevada Union's last pre-season game will be against the Lincoln Fighting Zebras at 4 p.m. Wednesday in Lincoln.
Frosh: Bella Vista 8, Nevada Union 4
Errors squandered a solid outing by the Nevada Union pitchers as they had twice as many errors as hits in a four-run loss to Bella Vista.
NU's Gary Menary threw four innings and allowed two runs, both of which were unearned. Ty Trathen threw the final two innings and gave up one run.
Leading NU at the plate was Jonathan Weaver with a 2-for-4 performance at the plate.
