Prep roundup: Holland leads Nevada Union at Boreal

The Nevada Union snowboard team carved up Boreal Monday, taking first place on the girls side of the competition.
In the second slalom race of the season, Nevada Union's Celine Holland notched her second first place finish of the season. Holland, a senior, tallied a two-race combined time of 40.63 seconds, which was six seconds faster than the second-place finisher, fellow Lady Miner Faith Robichaud. Placing second, Robichaud, a junior, finished with a time of 46.96. The third Lady Miner to place in the top 10 was Michaela Haemmig with a time of 54.38. Rounding out the scorers for NU was Zoe Favor with a time of 1:29.
The boys team was led by Alex Fitandes with an 11th-place finish at 47.35. Bradley Carrion (51.73) was next for NU with a 17th-place finish, Logan Smith (55.9) came in 28th, Andre Breaux (57.97) in 34th and Simon Nielson (58.19) in 35th.
Nevada Union takes 2nd at Sugar Bowl
T-shirt weather and a fast giant slalom course were the conditions of the day as the Nevada Union alpine ski team captured its third second place in the CNISSF Central II Division, marking the halfway point for the snow season that has yet to appear.
Despite the conditions at Sugar Bowl, sophomore Peter McDowell skied his best race of the season with a girls varsity second place finish at 1:28.86, while Caspar Hendrickson came in eighth at 1:36.42. Teammates Josh Harris and John Schlothauer finished up the point positions with a 1:42.59 (15th) and a 1:48.13 (20th) respectively.
The girls are showing tremendous improvement as Emma Stratman continues to lead the NU ladies finishing in the seventh spot with a 1:41.96 with teammate Tori Newman close behind at 1:45.92 for an 11th place. Mikaela Lujan came in 13th at 1:46.82, and Katie King placed 17th with a 1:50.74.
NU's newer skiers are getting faster and faster as well and worth keeping an eye on. Megan Andya who placed 20th (1:58.50) and Keegan Zetterberg who placed 23rd with a 1:57.87.
Miners fare well at Foothill
The Nevada Union wrestling team sent several wrestlers off to tournaments over the weekend with good results.
NU's Caleb Patterson and Kashe McHugh took first place at the Foothill frosh/soph tournament. McHugh, in his second year as a varsity wrestler, dominated the competition, and Patterson wrestled the best he has all year.
NU senior Will Sumner took fifth at the Battle for the Belt tournament in Temecula, wrestling in the 170-pound class. Sumner beat Austin Caleb Flores, who is the No. 5 California prep wrestler in that weight class.
