Prep roundup: Forest Lake Christian wins 2nd tourney of season

The Nevada Union girls freshmen basketball team poses with their second place trophy from the Bella Vista Bronco Bill Tourney.

The Forest Lake Christian girls basketball team is off to an impressive start to the 2013-14 season.

The Lady Falcons are 6-1, their only blemish a one-point loss to Sac Adventist, and have already notched two tourney championships.

After winning the Forest Lake Christian Christmas tourney Dec. 7, the Lady Falcons continued their strong tournament play last weekend, winning the Darren Tillotsen Memorial Tournament.

FLC beat Golden Sierra, Victory Christian and Foresthill to claim the tourney title.

Senior Josey Poppin and junior Lauren Piner were both named to the all-tourney team.

The Lady Miners fell just short of winning the Bella Vista Bronco Bill Tournament, falling in the title game to St. Francis, 65-54.

Graacie Sill led the Lady Miners in scoring with 16 points, which earned Sill player of the game. Sill was also voted runner up for Offensive Player of the Tournament for good reason. Sill was strong inside and out of the paint all three games, and her consistent scoring forced teams to double her, which led to easy buckets for her teammates.

Despite limited minutes in the second half, Avery Delhez added 13 points to the score and led the team in boards with six along with four steals.

Point guard Ashley Canevari with her tenacious defense was named Defensive Player of the Tournament for the Lady Miners, and Shaye Costanza was named Offensive Player of the Tournament.

In the first round, NU beat Vista del Lago, 54-40, and was led by Delhez with 16 points and seven rebounds.

In round two, the Lady Miners beat Folsom 64-47, getting a big game from Costanza with 22 points, five assists, five steals and five rebounds.
