Prep roundup: Bear River girls basketball has streak snapped by Center
February 17, 2014
The Bear River girls basketball team had been rolling as of late, winning 15-straight games dating back to Dec. 20, but they hit a bump in the road Monday in their final game of the regular season.
The Lady Bruins (22-3, 9-1Pioneer Valley League) dropped it’s final PVL contest of the season, losing 51-44 to Center (11-14, 5-5 PVL).
“It was back and forth for most the game and in the fourth they took the lead,” Bear River head coach Jeff Bickmore said. “We struggled to get shots to fall, and they hit some big shots down the stretch.”
Leading Bear River was senior Kaitlyn Reina with 20 points and nine rebounds. Maddi Dunn added 13 points, and Jenn Alberts scored nine.
“I wasn’t happy with the way we played tonight,” Bickmore said. “I thought we played distracted. But, as far as the playoffs go, I’m not worried.”
Despite the loss, the Lady Bruins finish the regular season as PVL champions, and will now wait to see their postseason route when brackets are released Wednesday.
FROSH: Bear River 44,
After losing their first PVL game of the season, the Lady Bruins reeled off nine straight wins to clinch at least a share of the league title with Placer.
Bear River’s Alyssa Pulkinghorn led all scorers with 27 points, and Vivian Hamilton added seven.
JV: Del Oro 44, Nevada Union 30
The Lady Miners fell just short of a Sierra Foothill League title Monday, losing to Del Oro in Loomis.
The Lady Golden Eagles, who became the league champs with the win, had lost just one league game this season and that was to NU. At the end of three quarters it looked like the Lady Miners were poised to take Del Oro down again, trailing by two, 30-28, heading into the fourth.
But, the Lady Miners managed just two points in the final quarter and Del Oro claimed the SFL title.
Ella Walton led NU with 10 points, Shawna Latter added six points and pulled down seven rebounds, and Ashtyn Willis provided a spark on the defensive end.
The Lady Miners close the season with a 18-8 record overall and 7-3 in SFL play.
