Know & Go
What: Nevada County Fast Pitch Softball League Opening Day
When: 10 a.m., May 10
Where: Les Eva Field, Memorial park, Grass Valley
Tracy McGrady is living out his out his childhood dream. The 38-year old, seven-time NBA All-Star signed with a minor league baseball team, the Sugarland Skeeters, as a pitcher last week.
It seems that no matter how old an athlete gets they still want to play.
Not all of us have the God given talents that McGrady has or the millions of dollars to fall back on if it doesn't work out, but many of us share the competitive drive he does. Even as athletes age and dreams of playing on the big stage fade, many simply don't want to hang up their cleats and stop playing.
Nationally, it makes for good headlines. Locally, it makes for some highly competitive recreational sports leagues, and none more so than the Nevada County Fast Pitch Softball League.
It's one of the oldest men's fast pitch leagues in California, and the players that participate in the league put out a quality product on weekly basis. The league features some of the best ball players Nevada County has to offer.
Opening day for the league is May 10 with games starting at 10 a.m. and the last game scheduled to start at 2 p.m.
The season will continue with games on Wednesdays and Thursdays through July with the championship scheduled for Aug. 1.
There will also be a Father's Day tournament, said league president Tom Allen. All games are played at Grass Valley's Memorial Park on the Les Eva Field. There is no cost to attend.
Last year's champion, http://www.EventHelper.com, will look to repeat, but it won't be easy with the likes of Eva's All-Stars, Anything Green and the Bulldogs chomping at their heels. EventHelper.com takes on Eva's All-Stars at noon on opening day, following the Bulldogs and A-Z Supply contest, and proceeding the Gold Country Automotive and Anything Green bout which caps the Opening Day slate of games.
