NU freshmen win tournament

The Miners won their boys basketball tournament Saturday, finishing off the weekend with an impressive 60-54 victory over Oakmont.
Jahn Chensee led the team with 22 points in a game where NU saw a 47-34 fourth-quarter lead begin to slip away, but the young Miner squad showed poise and toughness and battled back for the win.
Bear River 58, San Juan 53
The Bruins picked up a win Saturday over San Juan to finish seventh at the Kendall Arnett Tournament in Auburn.
Bear River fell behind early but regained control to take a 30-23 lead into halftime. Justin Beskeen and Nick Bachus led the Bruins' offense with 14 points each. Michael Raigoza came through with 11 points, and Andrew Harris tossed in seven points to go along with his five boards. Bear River extended its lead to 45-34 heading into the fourth quarter.
Despite San Juan regaining momentum in the fourth, the Bruins held strong to come away with the win. Beskeen was named to the all-tournament team.
Bear River (11-3) hosts River City Thursday.
Buckingham Charter 61, Forest Lake Christian 45
The Falcons lost the championship game Saturday to close out the Vacaville Christian Tournament in second place as they fell to Excel Academy.
Forest Lake Christian was led by Chase Augustino, who scored 20 points. Brandon Camacho stepped up and contributed 10 points. JJ Griffiths also played a key role on offense, chipping in nine points. The Falcons led at the half 25-22, but with two starters out, a 20-9 third-quarter run by Buckingham Charter was too much to overcome.
The Falcons (10-4) host Sacramento Waldorf Thursday.
JV: Del Campo 54,
Bear River 53
The Bear River junior varsity boys basketball team took fourth place in the Kendall Arnett Tournament with a heartbreaking one-point loss to Del Campo Saturday.
Kyle Uclaray led the Bruins with 12 points while Dave Maestrella and David O'Brien each tossed in 10 points. Brandon Murphy provided defensive energy in the second half and also scored seven points down the stretch.
The Bruins host River City Thursday.
JV: Nevada Union 72,
Valley Christian 27
The Miners picked up an easy win Saturday in the losers' bracket at the Roseville Tournament, as they crushed Valley Christian to end on a high note.
It was a great team win with Daniel Carter continuing to step up big for Nevada Union, as he dropped in 19 points. Trevor Humphries contributed 12 points, and Tobe Carter also came through for the team to add another 10 points. Steven Skaggs was awarded all-tournament honors.
The Miners (9-6) host Yuba City Wednesday.
Bear River 48, Lincoln 17
The Lady Bruins capped off the Lincoln Tournament with a monster win over host Lincoln Saturday.
Savannah Welz led Bear River with 13 points, followed closely by Kaitlyn Reina, who had 12 points to go along with six boards and five steals. Teryn Rath was dominant on defense with four blocked shots. Rath finished with eight points and Cindy Solomon also contributed five boards, three steals and three assists in the victory.
Bear River led 19-13 at the half and pulled away in the third quarter with a 22-3 run. The Lady Bruins (13-1), who held the fighting Zebras to only four points in the second half, will host Rio Linda Friday.
JV: Bear River 45,
Mesa Verde 23
The junior varsity Lady Bruins squad also earned a win in their Lincoln Tournament finale, almost doubling up Mesa Verde with a 22-point victory.
Savannah Wirth turned in an amazing performance for Bear River, scoring 16 points while shooting 89 percent from the floor. Wirth also helped her cause with eight steals and dished out four assists. Gwendolyn Hayden came up with nine steals and contributed six points.
The Lady Bruins (8-3) host Rio Linda Friday.
