IN THE WAKE OF The WEEK: Warriors, Cavs dominate on path to Finals rematch
May 19, 2017
MOTHER'S DAY THRILLER: The Warriors pull yet another rabbit out of the hat. With six days off, they show a lot of rust. They trail by 25 in the first half. An 18-0 run, Steph Curry's 40 points, and an untimely ankle injury to Kawhi Leonard changes the game's complexion. Late in the fourth, Golden State makes it all the way back to take a 101-100 lead. With Leonard sidelined, the Warriors put on the finishing touches for a shocking 113-111 win. Or was it really shocking?
WARRIORS ROLL: Golden State takes a 33-16 lead after one quarter. They are up 28 points at halftime and lead 106-75 after three. The lead bloats to over 40 in the fourth. Warriors win 136-100. Curry scorches for 29 while Durant notches 16. Extraordinary bench contributions. Patrick McCaw comes off the bench for 18. This one is over early. Tonight's tilt in San Antonio is provocative with Leonard still questionable.
EASTERN SUPREMACY: On their home court, the Celtics have no answers for LeBron James. He overpowers Boston in Game 1 as the Cavaliers win 117-104. It was not that close. How do the Celtics stop the Cavs? They don't. Cleveland makes a surgical strike with large leads and general dominance. When the Celts make a run, Cleveland always answers. It is a non-competitive match up that makes one wonder what a Warriors/Cavs match up would bring. Then again, we are a bit ahead of ourselves. Or are we? We will know better by the end of the weekend.
MUSIC CITY SINGS SWEET TUNE: Ah, this NHL series between the Anaheim Ducks and the Nashville Predators. Kelly Clarkson and Keith Urban for the National Anthem. However, tight series in territory where Nashville has never ventured before. The series is tied at 2-2 after the Preds come back from a 2-0 deficit to force overtime … only to lose. Back to Anaheim in a series where Nashville must now find a way to win two of the next three.
LaVAR BALL BAD FOR SPORTS: He continues to hawk his Big Baller brand of shoes and sports ware. However, he goes on FS1 and acts like a lunatic. Sparring with the hosts via disparaging remarks and generally poor behavior. Now he states that son Lonzo will only work out for the Lakers. Slow sales and a big mouth. Sports do not need an overbearing, obnoxious father.
GIANTS WIN 4-GAME SERIES: Luck or change? After losing game one to Cincinnati, the Giants come back to take the next three. On Friday night, it goes to the wee hours of the morning until Buster Posey hits a solo walk-off shot in the 17th. Saturday is another narrow win, but Sunday is a nifty 8-3 triumph in which Jeff Samardzija gets his first win of the season. No bats until the fourth game. If the Giants are to create a stir, it must be better hitting and pitching. Both have left the G-Men's fans bewildered.
NO HOME FOR KAEPERNICK: Still no takers as we wander into late May. Not so much his political views as his eroded skills. Seattle may be an interested suitor. However with Robert Griffith III still looking, you must wonder if Kap has made the poorest decision of his professional life in testing the free agent market. Too many mistakes. So little time.
TATTLETAIL WIFE?: Gisele Brady's comments that husband Tom Brady of the New England Patriots suffers concussions nearly every year. "We don't talk about it, but he does have concussions," she says. With the increasing strong concussion protocol of the NFL, this must raise eyebrows …and it does!
CHARGERS/RAMS STADIUM DELAYED: The grand opening has been pushed back a year. The culprit: 15.4 inches of winter rain. Heck, we get that in one month. Too much lost excavation time. The site looks like a small lake with a turned over wheelbarrow to the side. It is going to be a long haul in the current venues.
FINAL THOUGHT: May Aaron Hernandez rest in peace soon.
