The Grass Valley Miners continued their strong American Legion baseball season Tuesday with a mercy-rule victory over Auburn Post 84, 11-1, in six innings.
Playing on their home turf at Ted White Field on the campus of Nevada Union, the Miners (13-5) got an impressive outing on the mound and a well-rounded effort at the plate to cruise past Auburn.
Joey Souza dazzled from the slab, throwing a complete game while striking out seven and allowing just three hits and one earned run.
On the offensive end, Grass Valley got RBIs from eight different players in the win.
Leadoff man Jakob Freele went 2-for-5 with a triple and two RBIs, Dalton Maxwell accounted for two RBIs, and Souza helped himself out with a double and an RBI.
Noah Arriaga added a hit and a pair of RBIs, Nolan Fillman, batting in the designated hitter spot, went 4-for-4 with a RBI, Christian Straub was 1-for-2 with a RBI, Brady Porter chipped in with three singles and an RBI, and Jordan Jianinno walked three times and brought a runner home.
The Miners have a pair of games against Auburn left, coming Thursday and Saturday, before a makeup with El Dorado concludes the regular season.
The district tourney kicks off July 18.
