Falcons soar past Bruins
April 24, 2013
In a critical tennis match between long-time rivals, Bear River and Colfax, the Falcons improved their playoff standing with a 6-3 victory over the Bruins.
Playing on Bear River’s home courts Monday, the Bruins got their usual strong play from Andrew Leonard, the boys No. 1 individual, as well as both the No. 1 and No. 2 girls doubles teams.
Leonard cruised to victory over Colfax’s Drew Detwiler on Court 1. Leonard won he first set 6-2, then Detwiler pulled out with an injury in the second set.
With the win Leonard is now 11-2 overall this season and 7-2 in the Pioneer Valley League.
“Andrew played well today and will likely get a two seed in the singles playoffs,” Bear River head coach Jeff Carrow said.
In the No. 1 girls doubles match, Lily Carrow and Sofie Cutler continued their dominance in the PVL with a 6-0, 6-1 win. The victory moves Lily Carrow and Cutler to 12-1 overall and 8-1 in PVL play.
The other victorious Bruins were Kirsten Dietrich and McKayle Miller, who won the No. 2 girls doubles match, 6-0, 6-1.
Dietrich and Miller are now 7-1 in PVL contests.
The team loss drops Bear River to 4-5 in SFL play with Center and Colfax knotted up in the No. 2 spot at 6-3 in league play. Placer leads the PVL and has yet to lose this season.
Carrow said despite getting mathematically bounced from the team playoffs, the future is bright for Bear River tennis, as his team is young and will get better from year to year. The Bruins have no seniors on this year’s team.
The Bruins get Center Tuesday before the singles and doubles PVL playoffs get started Friday and Saturday respectively.
