Bruins, Miners pop pads in scrimmage

The Union staff

At J. David Ramsey Field, the Nevada Union Miners and Bear River Bruins, along with the Mesa Verde Mavericks, popped pads in one last football tune up before the 2014 regular season kicks off.

All three teams, at all three levels (freshman, junior varsity, varsity), participated in the scrimmage.

In the varsity scrimmage, the Bear River offense looked good against both Mesa Verde and Nevada Union, scoring multiple touchdowns against the Mavericks and one against NU.

For the Bruins, quarterback Austin Smith showed good mobility in the pocket and an accurate arm on the run.

On defense, the Bruins bent against NU, but didn't break. The Miners were able to effectively drive the ball against Bear River, but stalled near the red zone. In the drive NU quarterback Justus Spillner was able to hit on several short pass attempts.

The Miners defense stood out on the night, getting pressure on both the Mesa Verde and Bear River quarterbacks.
