Bruins advance at classic

Behind Justin Beskeen’s 25 points the Bear River basketball team topped Head-Royce, 64-51, in the first round of the Winter Wolf Classic.
Junior point guard Charlie Espinosa added nine points, Tyler Hajewski added nine off the bench, Michael Raigoza put in eight points, and Travis Anderson also added eight.
Bear River will look to make it two wins in a row to start the season at 8 p.m. today when it faces tournament host American Canyon.
JV: Dixon 60, Bear River 40
The Bruins dropped their Union Mine Tournament opening-round game to Dixon by 20 points.
Travis Whitehead led Bear River with 11 points, and Dave Maestrella added 10 in the loss.
Forest Lake Christian 51,
New Life Christian 30
The Falcons opened their game with New Life Christian with an 8-0 run and finished the first quarter with a 24-8 lead.
Forest Lake Christian never let the Crusaders come within single digits the rest of the game, as it cruised to a 21-point victory in the first round of the Faith Christian Tournament.
Chase Augustino led the Falcons with 23 points, including five buckets from beyond the arc. Senior Brandon Camacho added eight points and dished out eight assists, and Roman Makovey pulled down 11 rebounds to go with his eight points.
The Falcons look to keep soaring through the tournament bracket today when they face Stockton Christian.
Folsom 63, Nevada Union 42
The Miners opened the Bill Cartwright Classic with a disappointing 21-point loss to Folsom.
Nevada Union could muster only 13 points in the first half and shot 24 percent from the field for the game. Turnovers also hurt the Miners as they committed 25 on the night.
Nevada Union head coach Jeff Dellis said it was a sluggish performance by the Miners from the start.
“I am really intrigued to see how we respond,” he said. “If we set the bar for the season pretty high, we need to play better.”
Nevada Union will face Lodi today in the consolation bracket semifinal.

Del Campo 65 F/OT
With time winding down in the fourth quarter, Daniel Carter hit a 3-pointer as he fell out of bounds to send the Miners and Del Campo into overtime in the first round of the Oakmont Tournament.
In overtime Nevada Union outscored Del Campo 15-5 to seal the victory in its season opener. Carter finished with 16 points and Toby Carter added 18 for NU in the victory.
Bear River 60,
The Lady Bruins are off to a good start after edging the McClymonds Warriors by three points in the first round of Winter Wolf Classic.
Kaitlyn Reina led Bear River with 16 points, Cindy Solomon poured in 15, Savannah Welz added 10, Teryn Rath accounted for nine, and Jennifer Alberts had a pair of 3-pointers down the stretch to help the Lady Bruins to the win.
