“Big Wave,” Sockolov take NCCC Men’s Invitational
August 22, 2013
Nevada County Country Club hosted its annual Men's Invitational Aug. 16 and 17 with "Big Wave" Dave Menary and Bill Sockolov taking the title.
The tourney was set up with two-man teams, made up of one NCCC member and one guest, playing 36 holes with a different format each day.
The Aug. 16 game was a best ball of the partners; and Aug. 17 was a more difficult round using combined individual net scores. Tournament chairmen Don Crow, Bill Roach and their committee ran a fun event, ending with a great prime rib dinner and awards banquet.
Country club member Menary and his guest, Bill Sockolov, shot a blistering 53 in the best ball round and never looked back. Their second-day score of 129 gave them a total of 182 for a two-shot margin of victory over runners-up member Rick Honey and his guest, Grant Core (56-128, total 184).
Third place went to Jim Juvinall and his guest, John Gemignani, with a total score of 195 (56-139).
Tied for fourth place with scores of 196 were the father-son team of Frank and Dan Davis (59-137) and Bill Sinor and Jac Castleton (56-140).
Brothers Shaun and Mike Ruddy came home in sixth with a 197 total (60-137), and Elbia Hall and his guest, Dale Bourne, completed the payouts in seventh place with a score of 198 (62-136).
Hall was also recognized during the dinner for being the oldest player in the field, celebrating his 90th birthday and shooting well below his age with a round of 84. Closest to the Pin contests were won by Rick Metz on hole No. 2 and Scott Leonhard on hole No. 5. The Accuracy Drive on hole No. 7 was won by Bill Sockolov with a shot 2 inches off the line.
