Alumni Notebook: Virva, Rebels win meet

Dillon Virva, a 2012 graduate of Nevada Union High School, had a couple of great performances in the swimming pool Saturday as University of Nevada, Las Vegas swept their dual meet at Cal State University, Bakersfield.
Virva finished in 2nd place in the 50-yard freestyle with a time of 21.33 seconds and also came in 3rd in the 100-yard freestyle with a time of 47.37 seconds, less than one second off the lead combined for each race. Virva took 6th place in the 100-yard fly posting a time of 52.92 seconds and helped the Rebels secure more points in a couple of medley races.
Patrick Scott (Bear River '09); Sonoma State– Scott started in two games for the Seawolves last week coming away with a tough loss at Chico State followed by a win in a game that went down to the wire versus Cal State Stanislaus.
In Friday's 82-65 loss, Scott led all scorers on his team finishing with 16 points shooting 4-of-6 from the floor and 6-of-9 from the free-throw line. He also grabbed five boards on defense, but it wasn't enough as Chico State shot 55-percent from the floor.
Sonoma State came out on top Saturday over Cal State Stanislaus, 70-67. Scott dropped in a team high 17 points and dished out four assists playing 38 minutes of the game.

The Seawolves held a 28-25 lead at halftime and battled hard in the second half going up by as many as 16 points before surrendering the lead with about a minute to play.
Trailing 65-64, Scott hit a jumper with 50 seconds to play to give his team a one-point edge. Scott was later fouled and made both free-throws as his team went on to win.
The Seawolves (5-5, 3-3 CCAA) host two games this week, Friday against Cal State L.A. and again Saturday versus Cal State Dominguez Hills.
Josh Ritchart (Forest Lake Christian, '10); UC Davis– Ritchart contributed a team-high 25 minutes of play off the bench in the Aggies' Big West Conference home opener Saturday as UC Davis lost to Pacific, 74-64.
Ritchart was 4-of-10 shooting with two 3-pointers for 10 points. He also hauled in six boards. The Aggies led 24-23 at the half and quickly lost the lead in the second half as Pacific went on a 10-0 run. UC Davis pulled within a basket, but Pacific took advantage when it needed to, outscoring the Aggies 16-6 off turnovers.
UC Davis (4-9, 0-2 BWC) hosts Cal Poly Thursday.
Caroline Reeves (Nevada Union, '08); Cal Poly San Luis Obispo — Reeves started in two games last week as the Mustangs split, losing at Long Beach State and winning at UC Irvine.
In Thursday's 62-52 loss, Reeves contributed a team-high 23 minutes off the bench and shot 2-of-6 from the floor to finish with four points, seven boards and three assists. The game was tied at the half, but Long Beach State pulled away as the Mustangs made only 28.2 percent of their shots.
Reeves gave the Mustangs 17 minutes off the bench in Saturday's 64-46 win at UC Irvine. Reeves was 2-of-4 shooting for five points with four boards, two assists and a steal. The Mustangs led start to finish opening the game on a 13-0 run as the team shot 45.8 percent from the floor and connected on eight 3-pointers. The Mustangs (7-6, 1-1 BWC) next game is Thursday when they host UC Davis.
Steele Jantz (Nevada Union '08); Iowa State — Jantz saw limited action in the AutoZone Liberty Bowl December 31, completing 4-of-7 passes for 41 yards and one interception, and also carried the ball four times for six yards in a 31-17 loss against Tulsa.
Jantz finished his senior season with 1,603 yards passing for 13 touchdowns and a 62.1 percent completion rate.
The Cyclones (6-7) scored all of their 17 points in the
first quarter and held a 10-point lead before falling behind
for good early in the second quarter, as they allowed 24 unanswered points to close out the game.
