Alumni notebook: Virva impresses in Clovis

Dillon Virva, a 2012 Nevada Union graduate, impressed in the pool taking home the gold in the 50-meter freestyle at a Speedo Championship Series meet in Clovis.
Virva, swimming for the University of Nevada, Las Vegas club team (Team Rebel), not only took first place in the 50 freestyle event, but his time (22.73 seconds) currently ranks him ninth in the nation among collegiate swimmers.
Virva would also place eighth in the 100 freestyle (53.32) and took sixth in the 100 butterfly (56.28).
Next up for Virva is the Phillips 66 National Championships, which get started Wednesday, in Irvine.
Chad Bartlomé (Nevada Union '01; Sacramento Republic) and the Republic hit the road Saturday and took down the Arizona United SC, 2-1.
Bartlomé played forward for much of the contest and helped the Republic win their USL PRO league leading sixth away match. With the victory, the Republic improved to 12-6-3 and moved into third place in the standings.
On the season, Bartlomé has appeared in 19 games, started 10, has one goal and two assists.
Josh Roenicke (Nevada Union '01; Syracuse Chiefs) got the start for the Chiefs Saturday, but was hit hard as Syracuse lost to Scranton, 13-0.
Roenicke pitched the first four innings, allowing six earned runs on seven hits.
The loss drops Roenicke to 4-6 this season with a 5.56 ERA.
The Chiefs (Washington Nationals Triple-A affiliate) remain in first place in the International League North standings with a record of 64-51.
