The Forest Lake Christian boys basketball team cruised past Delta Charter Thursday, beating the Dragons, 79-63, and in the process setting up a match with Bear River today in the second round of the Victory Christian Tournament.
Against the Dragons, FLC’s Chase Augustino led the way with 19 points, 14 of which came in the second half. Christian Dethlefs added 16 from the post and Luke Jordan netted 14 in the win.
The Falcons (8-1) are 6-1 in tournament play this season.
The Bruins advanced to the second round with a win over San Juan, 62-43.
Bear River (5-3) had four players score in double figures, led by sophomore point guard David O’Brien with 14 points, Jake Sypnicki with 13, Jared Skowronski with 12 and Braden Duncan with 10 points to go with six steals.
The two schools that are located just a couple miles apart will face off at 7 p.m. today in the second round of the Victory Christian Tournament.
Monterey Trail 68, Nevada Union 44
The Miners fell in the first round of the Mel Good Tournament, falling to Monterey Trail by 24.
The loss drops NU to 2-6 for the season.
The Miners will look to bounce back and grab a victory today in the second round of the tourney.
Nevada Union 71, Vintage 27
The Lady Miners got a little bit of revenge on Vintage Thursday, beating the Napa-based team by 44 points in the opening round of the Wine Valley Tournament.
Vintage had beaten NU in the first round of the tourney two seasons ago.
In the lopsided win, NU had 10 of its 11 players score and every player got quality minutes, NU head coach John McDaniel said.
Senior Emma Peterson led the Lady Miner charge with 22 points, including three, 3-pointers. Fellow senior Sydney also hit three 3-pointers and finished with 14 points.
Grace Paye added nine points, 11 rebounds and three assists, Melanie O’Brien scored eight and pulled down six rebounds, and Sammy DeHart filled the stat sheet with six points, seven rebounds, six steals and four assists.
The Lady Miners (6-3) are back at it today for the second round of the Wine Valley Tournament.
JV: Nevada Union 30, Vanden 24
In a defensive struggle, the Lady Miners came out on top with a six-point victory over Vanden in the first round of the Del Campo Tournament.
“We are a defensive team, and tonight we did our job,” NU coach Gia Grimm said.
“Great defensive effort tonight.”
Aycee Willis led the Lady Miners with 12 points and 10 rebounds, Shawna Latter added eight points, Madison Lee pulled down 12 rebounds and Ella Walton did a good job of running the offense against a strong defensive team.
NU (7-2) takes the court again today for the second round of the tourney.
Bear River 58, Yuba City 14
In a game where the starters got plenty of rest and the reserves got some much needed minutes, the Lady Bruins walloped Yuba City by 44 in the first round of the Chavez Classic.
Kaitlyn Reina scored a team-high 13, Teryn Rath chipped in 10, MichelleTaylor sank 10, Michelle Whiting added eight and Savannah Wirth netted seven.
The Lady Bruins (7-1) will be back at it today in the second round of the Chavez Classic.
