Local riders earn top finishes at Nevada City Dirt Classic

Before last Sunday’s Nevada City Classic criterium road race, there was the Nevada City Dirt Classic hosted a day earlier at Osborn Hill in Grass Valley for the cyclists who enjoy getting a little dirty.

More than 80 racers lined up the morning of June 15, traveling from as far as Carson City and Santa Cruz to experience mountain bike racing in the Nevada County area.

Despite all the outside competition it was local racers who retained the bragging rights as Jason Moeschler placed first in the pro category, and Stosh Bankston took first in the 40-49 age group.

Bike groups, Bicyclists of Nevada County and Youth Bicyclists of Nevada County Foundation, along with many local volunteers, helped prepare this new venue to bring enthusiastic cyclists to Nevada County.

Race 2 is scheduled for June 29, and Race 3 is July 27 on the U.S. Forest Service’s Pioneer and Hallelujah Trails.

The Nevada City Dirt Classic is a new fundraiser series, benefitting Youth Bicyclists of Nevada County Foundation programs for school bike club youths, according to

The YBONC foundation’s mission is to engage youths with the outdoors, promoting a positive and healthy lifestyle with the sport of cycling. This is accomplished by supporting school bike clubs and hosting a variety of bike-related activities with our programs. For information, visit
