Alumni Notebook: Roenicke collects 2nd win of season

Josh Roenicke, a 2001 Nevada Union graduate and pitcher for the Minnesota Twins, made three appearances and earned his second win of the season as his team went 2-4 this past week, winning one game in each of its three-game series versus the Royals and the Nationals.

In Wednesday’s 4-1 loss at Kansas City, Roenicke entered the game in the bottom of the seventh inning and threw 1/3 inning as he allowed one hit, a walk and an earned run and recorded a strike out. Minnesota struggled offensively as it left 14 runners on base. On Saturday, the Twins knocked off the Nationals 4-3 in 11 innings in Washington, where Roenicke came out of the bullpen in the 10th to relieve Jared Burton with the game tied 3-3. He pitched one inning and surrendered just one hit and no runs to get the win. Minnesota’s right fielder Ryan Doumit hit an RBI-single in the top of the 11th to give the Twins the lead as closer Glen Perkins came in and shut the door for his 13th save on the season. Catcher Joe Mauer homered to left center for the Twins in the fifth to put Minnesota up 3-2, but Kurt Suzuki hit an RBI-double for the Nationals in the seventh to force the extra frames. In a 7-0 loss against the Nationals Sunday, the Twins managed just three hits for the game as Washington’s Jordan Zimmermann put together a dominating performance on the mound as he allowed two hits and struck out eight through seven innings. Roenicke relieved middle relief pitcher Ryan Pressly in the bottom half of the sixth and threw 2/3 inning and induced two fly ball outs as he yielded no hits or runs. All seven of the Nats’ runs came with starter Scott Diamond on the mound.

The Twins (27-33) fell to fourth place in the American League Central division and will open a nine-game home stand as they face the Philadelphia Phillies in a three-game series starting Tuesday.
