NU takes 3rd at SFL meet

The Nevada Union boys varsity and girls junior varsity teams both took home third-place at the Sierra Foothill League’s championship meet this past weekend at Woodcreek High School.

It was a two-day meet with trials held Friday, and finals on Saturday for the top-eight qualifiers in each event.

The Miner boys varsity divers put Nevada Union in first place at the beginning of the meet with Adam Seifert, Austin Foote and Lloyd Tom earning second, third and fourth-place.

Senior Kendall Pawlowski was NU’s top points earner at the swim meet. He qualified second for finals in the 100 Butterfly and beat the top qualifier to earn NU’s only individual first-place finish with a time of 52.85 seconds.

Pawlowski also moved up in place to get second in the 500 freestyle with a time of 4 minutes, 48.97 seconds.

Senior Patrick Herbert finished third in the 100 backstroke with a time of 54.16, while senior teammate Nathan Ashbaugh came in eighth with a 59.43. Herbert also finished third in the 50 free with a time of 22.55.

Sophomore teammate Dominic Giuliani finished fifth with a time of 22.74. Junior Parker Rhodes moved up two places in the finals heat of the 100 breaststroke, making his sections cut in that event with a time of 1:05.68.

The varsity boys 200 freestyle relay team of Pawlowski, Herbert, Ashbaugh and Giuliani finished second in the 200 freestyle relay behind a dominant Granite Bay relay team, and the same NU team finished the meet touching out the Del Oro 400 freestyle A relay team to get third-place in that event. Herbert’s anchor split of 48.13 was the key factor in staying ahead of the challenging Del Oro team. Rhodes, Pawlowski, Ashbaugh and Herbert will now move on the represent NU in two relays at the CIF sections at Tokay High School, May 10.

The top points earner for the varsity girls, Lisa Ellis, earned a sixth-place finish in the 50 free with a time of 25.78. She also was a finalist in the 100 backstroke, swimming to a fifth-place in that event with a time of 55.81.

Hayley Chase, a finalist in both the 100 butterfly (seventh-place) and the 100 breaststroke, moved up two places and dropped three seconds from her preliminary time to earn a sixth-place finish with a 1:09.50.

Junior Nicole Blaney dropped three seconds from her lifetime best and placed seventh in the same event.

Junior Christie Wurster dropped four seconds in the finals of the 500 freestyle to qualify for sections in that event with a time of 5:48.72.

Sophomore Sydni Robinson competed in the 100 backstroke for the varsity girls and made section cuts in multiple events.

The varsity relay team of Wurster, Blaney, Ellis and Robyn Fernandez finished third in the 200 freestyle relay.

For the junior varsity girls, the top points earner was Samantha Kruschke.

She qualified for sections in the 200 freestyle during a finals swim in which she dropped nine seconds from her preliminary time and moved up three places. Freshman Charlotte Coffin finaled in the 500 freestyle, and sophomores Caitlin Wood and Adriana Marquez finaled in the 100 backstroke, while sophomore Jennifer Larson finished fifth in the 100 breaststroke.

The junior varsity relay team of Coffin, Kruschke, Emma Lauterbach and Anna Baccetti finished third in the 200 freestyle relay with a time of 1:58.26.

For the junior varsity boys, sophomore Ethan Good finaled in the 500 freestyle.
