Little League: GV Giants outlast NC Angels

The Grass Valley Giants visited the Nevada City Tigers Monday night in what turned out to be a Little League thriller.

The Giants would eventually leave the ball park with a 13-8 victory, but it wasn’t without a fierce effort from the Tigers.

Both teams pitched their aces, Andrew Link for the Giants and Andrew Pardini for the Tigers.

The Giants struck for two in the first on a single by Adam Dennis and a base hit by Gary Menary followed by Cole Johnson knocking in both runs with a key two-out base hit for the 2-0 lead.

The Tigers came out swinging against Link. Hard singles by Nick Whittlesey and Kevin Mathieson were followed by a crushing ground rule double by Pardini. With one run in and runners on second and third and no outs, Link retired the next three batters to keep the score 2-1.

Down 3-1 in the third, the Tigers got five straight base hits by Whittlesey, Mathieson, Pardini, Thomas T., and Ethan Garrity.

After an out, Dominic Garrity doubled in a couple. Dominic Garrity later scored on Miles Y’s double.

Pardini threw four nice innings, but once he left, the Giants came to life. Trailing 7-3, the Giants scored two on hits by Dennis, Ben Powell and then a Link double.

Powell relieved Link giving up one run while pitching two innings, as the Giants clawed back to an 8-5 deficit in the fifth.

The Giants batted around and scored on two hits in the inning by Link along with walks from Luke Cornish, Evan Rashby, Grady McCuen, Dennis and Powell.

Menary closed the game for the Giants, throwing three innings, giving up one hit while striking out six. Johnson finished the scoring in the seventh, getting his third hit of the game. Johnson finished the day with three RBIs.
