Little League: Big inning helps Bear River A's past PV Cubs


The Bear River Major Division A’s had a strong showing Thursday, taking down the Penn Valley Cubs 12-3 in Little League action.

Bear River got a stellar outing on the mound from Reid Zolldan, who tallied six strikeouts in five innings of work. David Aldrich closed the game for the A’s in the sixth with a pair of strikeouts.

The fourth inning stood as the game’s defining inning, as the A’s notched 10 runs in the fourth alone.

Bear River finished the day with 11 hits with Nathan Van Patten, Cameron Kodai and Damien Christen all adding three RBIs each. Jacob Rivett was solid behind the plate and added two RBIs.

With the win the A’s move just one game behind the Brewers in the standings.

Penn Valley Giants 11,

Sierra Foothill Padres 9

The Penn Valley Junior Division Giants won a tightly contested back-and-forth affair Thursday against the Sierra Foothill Padres.

The Giants jumped out to a 2-0 edge after the first inning, but the Padres battled back to tie it at 2-2 in the second.

Both teams tallied one run in the third. In the fourth, the Giants took the lead, scoring three runs to the Padres’ one.

Sierra Foothill wasn’t going to roll over though and plated two runs in the fifth to tie the game at 6-6.

The sixth was when the Giants blew the game open, scoring five runs to extend the lead to 11-6, but again the Padres made a push.

Sierra Foothill plated three more runs in their final at-bat before finally running out of outs.

The Giants got key hits several players including Owen Day with a triple, Sean Stoll, Justus Arnberg, Travis Luttrell, and Wyatt Hook all added doubles and helping round out the game with singles were Blake Yokom, Tyler Villnow and Benny Gemetti.

Grass Valley Giants 12, Nevada City Giants 2 F/5 innings

The Grass Valley Giants won their second contest against their Nevada City counterparts Friday, handing the Nevada City version of the Giants a 10-run loss in Little League action.

The stars for Grass Valley were Ben Powell, who threw four innings of two hit ball.

For the GV Giants, everything started with a walk by Adam Dennis.

An error, a walk and the hardest hit ball we’ve scene all season, a double by Luke Cornish, gave Grass Valley the lead.

After a Cole Johnson single, Grass Valley was up 4-0.

Justin Houlihan pitched a couple shut down innings for Nevada City, but then Grass Valley started rolling again with another walk to Dennis followed by base hits by Powell, Andrew Link and Cole Johnson to make the score 8-2.

Other big hits came from Caden Unholz who doubled, Powell, Menary, Link and Grady McCuen.

On defense, Grass Valley turned two double plays to keep Nevada City off the base paths.

Link pitched the fifth inning to help keep them in check.
