Prep roundup: Lady Miners win with walkoff

The Nevada Union softball team won in dramatic fashion Monday, topping Yuba City 11-10 in extra innings.

The Lady Miners’ Shyanne Parrish went 3-for-5 on the day and drove in the game winning run in the bottom of the 10th inning.

The win moves NU to 2-0 this season, matching its win total from a season ago.

In the win, NU got a big outing from sophomore Sarah Lundmark with a 3-for-3 performance, including a 3-run home run. Sammy Nolen added three hits, two of which were doubles, and scored three runs. Cheyanne Ramos, Torri Parman and Savannah Ozuna chipped in a two hits each in the victory.

Junior Alexis Deatrick got the win for NU, pitching the final four innings, striking out six and allowing just one run.

The Lady Miners (2-0) will look to keep the wins coming today when they travel to Oroville for a double-header.

Bailey Kennedy pitched a complete game, and Emma Zoelin notched a pair of doubles to lead the Lady Miners past the Lady Honkers by four.

The game was knotted at 7-7 in the bottom of the sixth. That’s when the Lady Miners opened things up with four runs to take the non-league matchup.

Kennedy struck out three and walked two in seven innings pitched to earn the victory for NU.

Zoelin had the hot bat with three hits on the day, Julia Riggs added a double of her own and drove in a pair of runs, and Eden Baker went 1-for-2 with two runs scored.

NU (5-0) was led by Logan Lowe, Andrew Puleo and Derek Frank all with 2-over-par 38s. Burt Heinzelman shot a 39 and his younger brother Max Hienzelman rounded things out for NU with a 45.

The Miners will hit the links again Monday in a rematch with lincoln.

Tennis

Forest Lake Christian 7, Sacramento Country Day 2

The Forest Lake Christian tennis team had its way with Sacramento Country Day Tuesday, cruising to a 7-2 victory.

The Falcons got a big win on the boys side with Mark Hail coming from a set down to beat Nathan Chan, 0-6, 7-5, 6-4.

On the girls side, Hannah Burnett easily topped Amme Thompson, 6-0, 6-0, to get the win.

Soccer

Folsom 1, Nevada Union 0

The Nevada Union girls soccer team lost by a goal to Folsom Monday in a preseason match against the Lady Bulldogs.

The Lady Miners were able to get off five shots to the Bulldog’s seven with neither team finding net in the first half where the Lady Miner’s played the majority of the game in the attacking half.

Ellie Demartini, NU’s keeper, was the team’s player of the game Monday as she made some amazing stops at the goal.

For the first twenty minutes of the second half the play was pretty even and then with seven minutes to go the Bulldogs made an impressive attack and scored a goal after the Lady Miner’s cleared out the ball from a prior attempt. Unfortunately, NU cleared it into a pack of Bulldogs. The defense didn’t allow another score with defensive captain Meaghan O’Conner keeping the defensive back line on their toes.

“Folsom High has some aggressive players that brought a high level of intensity to the pitch,” NU coach Ken Ramirez said in an email. “We have grown since the tournament and were able to improve enough to make this match a close one. As is the case with preseason, we get to see what we need to adjust and the coaching staff will regroup to strengthen the team.”

The Lady Miners’ next match will be MArch 13 at Colfax.
