The Bear River girls basketball team opened the 2012-13 season Monday with a Foundation game victory over Dixon.
The Lady Bruins, back after a stellar 2011-12 season in which they won a share of the Pioneer Valley League title and made a deep run in the Sac-Joaquin Section playoffs, held off the Rams, 46-41, to move to 1-0.
Leading the Lady Bruin charge was junior forward Kaitlyn Reina with 14 points. She was joined in the post by returning starter Teryn Rath who pitched in six points.
Maddie Dunn added 10 points and Savannah Welz notched nine points in the victory.
Dixon played the Lady Bruins close the whole game, trailing by only two at halftime, 27-25. Dixon hit six 3-pointers on the night and got double-digit scoring performances from Rebecca Immel and Madison Dwelley. But, in the end the Lady Bruin defense held on, allowing just 16 second half points as Bear River closed out the opening night five-point victory.
The Lady Bruins hit the road Thursday to play McClymonds in the Winter Wolf Classic.

The Bruins junior varsity squad started the season Tuesday night with a 25-point pounding of Mira Loma. Dave Maestrellas had an impressive opening night with 18 points, six rebounds and five steals to lead Bear River. Kyle Uclaray scored 13 points and led the Bruin defense, which only allowed eight Mira Loma points in the second half. Connor Hollister led all Bruin rebounders with seven. The Bruins will take the hard court again this weekend when they travel to the Union Mine Tournament.
