Nevada Union’s Garrett Migliozzi continued his stellar cross country season by running to a third-place medal in the Sac-Joaquin Section Division I meet at Willow Hill in Folsom.
With the impressive finish, Migliozzi advances to the 2012 CIF State Cross Country Championships presented by Farmers.
The junior distance runner posted a personal best and a Nevada Union record for the Willow Hill course with a time of 15 minutes and 59 seconds.
Migliozzi was just 0:09 behind the first-place finisher, Jack Scranton of Davis.
With his third-place finish, Migliozzi becomes the lone Miner to qualify for the state meet Nov. 24 at Woodward Park in Fresno.
At the section meet, seven other Miner runners also notched personal bests, including David French who finished 12th overall and with a time of 16:31. Kael Newton had his best race of the season with a 38th-place finish at 17:33. Max Ardns finished 62nd with a time of 18:39, Skyler Cotton crossed in 63rd with a time of 19:05, and Nathan Aragon posted a personal best 19:51 to end the season with a 66th-place finish.
For the Lady Miners, freshman Nora Pizzella led the way with a personal best 19:58, good enough for 22nd. Chloe Reindl came in 33rd with a personal best 20:24, Marina McKenzie was 43rd with a personal best 21:24, Holly Harrison also posted a personal best of 22:04 to place her 54th, and Bella Brownwood rounded things out for NU with a 66th place finish in 24:47.
The Bear River cross country team closed the 2012 season by racing the Willow Hill course at the Sac Joaquin Section Division IV race on Saturday.
Expectations were high for the Bruins but unfortunately they came up short and did not qualify any runners for the state meet.
The bright spots on the day where performances by the varsity girls, which included Pioneer Valley League individual champion Mary Nattrass finishing eighth overall in a time of 20:30 and Sierra Mitchell, placing 18th in a time of 21:14 for the 5K course.
For the junior varsity girls, Olivia Kirks and Erica Higley made the medals stand with a 15th- and 17th-place finishes, respectively. Freshman standout Patrick Gillis finished the Bruins’ day of racing by turning in a personal record performance of 12:49 for the 3,300-meter course and a 13th-place finish.
“The Bruins gutted it out against some tough competition,” Bear River head coach Kevin Vasquez said. “I’m proud of this team for a good season of racing.”
