The Forest Lake Christian Lady Falcons volleyball team was victorious in the first round of the Sac-Joaquin Division-V playoffs Tuesday in Modesto defeating Holt Academy in three straight sets 25-7, 25-12 and 25-15.
Morgan Koch led the way for Forest Lake with seven kills and two blocks. Aly English contributed four kills, seven assists and four aces. Emily Pearce recorded nine assists and two digs. As a team, the Falcons served an astonishing 22 aces.
“One of the things we did very well was that we only had one hitting error,” said head coach Travis Smith. “We were just clicking, were in playoff mode.”
In addition to advancing to the second round of the playoffs, the Central Valley California League named Forest Lake’s Koch and English to All-League first team. Pearce, Megan Gauthier and Emily Woodward were all selected to All-League second team.
Next up for the Falcons will be No. 13 seed Vacaville Christian who upset No. 4 seed Big Valley Christian. The match is Thursday at Forest Lake at 7 p.m.
Girls water polo
Merced 12, Bear River 9
After trouncing Turlock in the first round of the Sac-Joaquin Section Division-I girls water polo playoffs, Bear River faltered in the second round, losing to Merced, 12-9.
The Lady Bruins fell behind early and charged back in the fourth quarter, but ran out of time to complete the comeback, said Bear River head coach Darryn Glasgow.
The Sierra Foothill League champions had a t ough time finding its flow early said Glasgow.
“Today, the stuff we been doing all season, that rhythm with the girls just wasn’t there,” Glasgow said. “They fought back at the end, but we just ran out of time.”
Leading the Lady Bruins was Nicole Groat, Andrea Brock, Beth Nelson and Cindy Solomon, Glasgow said.
“Drea Brock was amazing, Beth Nelson was amazing and Cindy Solomon played her heart out,” She said. “Nine times out of 10 we win that game, but give (Merced) credit, they were well prepared.”
