Beryl Odom


Beryl Ray Odom died Feb. 10 at Sierra Nevada Memorial Hospital. He was 84.

Graveside services will be held at 2 p.m. today at Greenwood Memorial Gardens. Memorial services will be held at 11 a.m., Friday, Feb. 15, at First Baptist Church in Grass Valley. Pastor Mike Sanchez will officiate.

Mr. Odom was born Oct. 31, 1923, in Ada, Okla., to Walter L. Odom and Gladys (Rhea) Odom. He attended grade schools in San Bernadino and Phoenix, Ariz., and graduated from high school in Phoenix. He served in the U.S. Army from February 1943 to January 1946. He married Wilmetta E. Griffith on Aug. 29, 1947, in Phoenix.

Mr. Odom worked as an assistant manager and checker at grocery stores in Arizona and California. He was a member of the First Baptist Church in Grass Valley for 45 years, the Retail Clerks Union, the Gold Country Carvers and the Widowed Person Association of California, Chapter 14. He enjoyed photography, woodworking, woodcarving, travel and pinochle.

Mr. Odom is survived by his daughters and sons-in-law Lynn Marie and Hal West, of Grand Junction, Colo., and Susan Kay and Ed Ronningen, of Coeur d'Alene, Idaho; grandchildren Anthony West, Matthew West, Amber Ronningen, Erik Ronningen, Peter Ronningen, Laura Nichols and Heidi Ronningen; four great-grandsons and one great-granddaughter.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Wilmetta E. Odom.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Living Well Medical Clinic in Grass Valley.

Arrangements are under the direction of Hooper and Weaver Mortuary in Nevada City.
