Pete Ruiz, a 2005 Nevada Union graduate, and member of the Portland Sea Dogs (a Double-A affiliate of the Boston Red Sox) pitched a scoreless inning out of the bullpen in his teams’ final game of the regular season Monday.
Ruiz, allowed a walk, but no real damage was done while he was on the hill. The Sea Dogs did drop the game to the Harrisburg Senators, 3-0, but they now ready for the postseason after finishing the season 88-54 and winning the Eastern League’s Eastern Division.
Ruiz closes the season with 3-2 record out of the bullpen to go with a 3.77 ERA in 23 appearances. Ruiz also had two saves. The Sea Dogs will face the Binghamton Mets in the first round of the playoffs, which get underway on Wednesday.
Josh Roenicke (Nevada Union ‘01; Colorado Springs Sky Sox) pitched a total of five innings out of the Sky Sox bullpen last week, appearing in two games, both of which were against the first place Omaha Storm Chasers.
In his two outings, Roenicke allowed five earned runs off 11 hits. Roenicke did strike out five to just one walk.
The Sky Sox (a Triple-A affiliate of the Colorado Rockies) finish the season 53-91 overall and in last place in the Pacific Coast League Northern Division.
Roenicke’s year comes to a close with a 4-7 win/loss record and a 6.02 ERA. Between the Syracuse Chiefs and the Sky Sox, Roenicke pitched in 29 games, starting 15 of those.
Tanner Vallejo (Nevada Union ‘13; Boise State) and the Broncos opened the season with a 35-13 loss to Ole Miss Thursday in the Georgia Dome.
In the game, Vallejo, a sophomore linebacker, made a team-high nine tackles, seven of which were solo and 2.5 were for a loss.
The Broncos will look to bounce back Saturday when they face Colorado State.
Chad Bartlomé (Nevada Union ‘01; Sacramento Republic) and the Republic played the Wilmington Hammerheads to a 0-0 draw Saturday. The Republic are 16-6-4 overall and have two regular season matches left before the playoffs get started Sept. 13.
